Overview

The History of the Coins Nevan O’Kelly was the only generous leprechaun in all of Limerick, Ireland. His brother Ronan constantly reprimanded him for giving away his gold coins. Nevan happened to be an expert cobbler, but instead of hiding the gold he received for his shoes in the family pot, for every two coins he earned, he would keep one coin and give the other to a deserving human. This behavior was completely contrary to leprechaun tradition. The O’Kelly leprechauns, like all other leprechauns, were expected to hoard their treasure indefinitely. Nevan did not believe in this tradition. He found that when he gave away his gold, he received good luck in return. That, he claimed, was the secret to his success in shoemaking. One day, while Nevan whistled and worked peacefully in his shop, Arlen O’Connor stormed in. As governor of the leprechaun population in Limerick, Arlen had outwitted many humans in his life. Arlen’s spectacles nearly fell off of his pointed nose as he shouted at Nevan. He had heard of Nevan’s antics, and he had had enough. Telling him never to return to Limerick, Arlen banished Nevan to Galway. Despair filled Nevan as he packed his bags, and he was never heard from again. Centuries later, Nevan’s great-great granddaughter Abigail discovered Nevan’s treasure crock in Galway. Her mind reeling with stories of her great-great grandfather, she decided to craft coins to look like the ones Nevan had shared. When she kept them to herself, she wasn’t lucky at all, but as soon as she started giving them away, she became the luckiest leprechaun around. The coins Nevan and Abigail had are still circulating today. They are recognizable by the four-leaf clover on one side and the words “good luck” on the other. As Nevan and Abigail found out, however, the coins are only lucky when shared. So, if you happen to come upon two of these coins, hold on to one and give the other away. You might just find the luck you’ve been waiting for. This story was passed down by the O’Kelly Leprechauns, do you believe them?
